Frequently asked questions
Accessibility statements, the Funka Accessibility Score, badges and membership, answered plainly.
Accessibility statements
An accessibility statement is a public page on your website that explains how accessible your digital service is. It describes which standard you follow (usually WCAG 2.2 AA), which parts of the site are not yet compliant, what you are doing about it, and how a visitor can contact you if something blocks them.
It is a legal requirement for most organisations under the European Accessibility Act, and it is also the page people actually look for when they hit a barrier, so it needs to be current, honest and easy to find.
If your service falls under the European Accessibility Act (and, for public sector bodies, the Web Accessibility Directive), yes, a published, up-to-date accessibility statement is required. Enforcement varies by country, but the obligation to publish is consistent.
We scan your site, then fill the statement with what we actually found: your Funka Accessibility Score, the standard you are measured against, known issues and the status of your remediation plan.
On a Free membership you get a pre-filled template and add your own organisational details. On Premium our consultants draft the full statement for you and it is refreshed with every monthly scan.
At least annually, and whenever your site changes meaningfully. With monthly scans your statement stays current automatically, so it never becomes an outdated PDF from two years ago.
The Funka Accessibility Score
The Funka Accessibility Score is a single number from 0–100 built from four subscores covering technical conformance, content and structure, interaction and navigation, and clarity of the experience. Each subscore comes with insights and concrete tips.
Yes. Enter one URL and you get your score, accessibility insights, three tips on what to fix first, a competitor benchmark and a statement template, no payment required.
Automated tests only catch part of the picture. The score combines automated checks with structured expert criteria, and on Premium senior consultants review the findings and add human insight to your report.
Badges
There are four levels: Neutral, Bronze, Silver and Gold. Bronze, Silver and Gold reflect your Funka Accessibility Score and require a Premium membership with monthly scans. Free members always display the Neutral badge.
It opens your live accessibility statement in a new tab, showing your current score and status. The badge and the statement update together after each scan.
Your badge reflects your latest scan, so it can move down as well as up. That is the point, it is a live signal, not a certificate.
Scope and limitations
No. The score is indicative. It is produced by an automated testing engine (axe-core, measured against WCAG 2.2 AA) combined with an assessment of your accessibility documentation maturity.
A high score does not prove legal compliance, and a low score does not mean your site is unusable. The badge is a live signal of measured performance, not a certificate under the European Accessibility Act, the Web Accessibility Directive, EN 301 549 or the ADA.
Automated checks reliably detect only a portion of accessibility barriers. Judgement-based criteria, whether alternative text is meaningful, whether a heading structure makes sense, whether an interaction is understandable, cannot be measured by software.
An accurate picture requires a manual expert audit, testing with assistive technology, and testing with real users. Our senior consultants provide this as a service alongside the score.
No. Funka provides accessibility measurement, documentation support and expert guidance, not legal advice, and we accept no liability for regulatory outcomes. Responsibility for the accessibility and legal compliance of your digital service remains with your organisation.
